California law generally prohibits job applications that ask questions about an applicant’s criminal history, as well as generally prohibits employers from having a blanket ban on hiring people with criminal histories. California law also prohibits housing providers from having a blanket ban against individuals with criminal histories. In addition, California law forbids discriminatory job and housing advertisements that include statements such as:
Please use the online submission form below to report employment or housing applications or advertisements that you think may violate California’s civil rights laws, including the Fair Chance Act (“Ban the Box”), restrictions on housing providers’ use of criminal history, and “source of income” discrimination in housing. DFEH will review the submission and determine whether further action is warranted.
Submissions can be made anonymously. However, DFEH will not be able to contact you if we have a question about your submission if you do not submit your contact information. Where possible, DFEH will not share your contact information with any third party including an employer or housing provider.
